SYNOPSIS

After an accident in his past, KENJI, a security night watchman, retired from kick boxing . His wife, NAMIKO, also works to make their livelihood together. Kenji, who needs the money, gets introduced by a friend and takes a job as a bodyguard for NITTA, a mafia boss.

Godfather Nitta, who has just come to Tokyo from the country, takes Kenji with him as they come and go along with AYAKO, a hostess who Nitta spends many days with. Without any instructions from Nitta, Kenji follows Nitta to her house one night. Little by little, from Nitta’s generosity and dignified character, Kenji starts to feel adoration for the man. Then, on a whim from Nitta’s recommendation, Kenji ends up sleeping with RISA, Ayako’s younger co-worker.

His wife Namiko, who discovers that he’s guarding a yakuza, tries to convince him to quit for fear of his safety. Kenji gives her a cold reception as he’s racked with guilt from sleeping with Risa and disgusted with his own tameness.

Kenji talks about his past with Nitta. Actually, Kenji has killed a man in self-defense. Kenji’s reason for living used to be the world of kickboxing as a fighter and he one day hoped to become a coach as well. But he has long given up on those dreams.

After that, the other mafia members are suspicious of Kenji who is not a mafia member and so closely guards their boss. Kenji is asked to be prepared to protect the boss with his life by a younger mafia member. As his loyalty towards Nitta grows, Kenji decides to keep working to protect him. Meanwhile, Namiko thinks otherwise. While Kenji thinks he is doing the right thing to make more money so his wife Namiko can have an easier life, she does not agree with his intentions. Their lives continue to drift apart.

Several days later, Kenji learns from Ayako that Nitta is very fond of him. Kenji decides to official join the mafia and petitions Nitta for his blessing. But Nitta blurts back, “Someday plenty of men will come after you, so don't be a yakuza,” which provides him with an escape route. With his road to the yakuza finally closed, Kenji sees some kids practicing karate in the streets and decides to take his life back. He decides to go back to his wife.

But, on the way home, tragedy strikes. Kenji is suddenly knifed in the back. KAZAMA, a newspaper delivery boy that Kenji has recently gotten to know, is holding the knife. It was the desperate action of a man who could hurt a fly. Kenji tries to fight back but collapses. As Kazama sees Kenji, he goes crazy and runs off. Kenji tries to talk to his wife on the phone but she doesn’t hear the phone as she’s too busy cooking and waiting for his return..

As he lose consciousness, in Kenji’s mind, was all this a dream or an illusion? Images of him serving the mafia boss and living happily with his wife rise to the surface.
