SYNOPSIS
After an accident in his past, KENJI, a security night watchman, retired from kick boxing . His wife, NAMIKO, also works to make their livelihood together. Kenji, who needs the money, gets introduced by a friend and takes a job as a bodyguard for NITTA, a mafia boss.
Godfather Nitta, who had just come to Tokyo from the countryside, took Kenji with him as they came went along with AYAKO, a hostess whom Nitta spent many days with. Without any instructions from Nitta, Kenji followed Nitta to her house one night. Little by little, with Nitta’s generosity and dignified character, Kenji started to admire him. Then, on a whim from Nitta’s recommendation, Kenji ended up sleeping with RISA, Ayako’s younger co-worker.
His wife Namiko, who discovered that he’s guarding a yakuza, tried to convince him to quit due to a concern about his safety. Kenji gave her a cold response as he’s racked with guilt from sleeping with Risa and disgusted with his own tameness.
Kenji talked about his past with Nitta. Actually, Kenji had killed a man in self-defense. Kenji’s reason for living used to be the world of kickboxing as a fighter and he one day hoped to become a coach as well. But he had long given up on those dreams.
After that, the other mafia members were suspicious of Kenji who was not a mafia member but guarded their boss so closely. Kenji was asked to be prepared to protect the boss with his life by a younger mafia member. As his loyalty towards Nitta grew, Kenji decided to keep working to protect him. Meanwhile, Namiko thought otherwise. While Kenji thought he was doing the right thing to make more money so his wife Namiko could have an easier life, she did not agree with his intention. Their lives continued to drift apart.
Several days later, Kenji learned from Ayako that Nitta was very fond of him. Kenji decided to officially join the mafia and petitioned Nitta for his blessing. But Nitta blurted back, “Someday plenty of men will come after you, so don't be a yakuza,” which provided him an escape route. With his road to the yakuza finally closed, Kenji saw some kids practicing karate in the streets and decided to take his life back. He decided to go back to his wife.
But, on the way home, tragedy struck. Kenji was suddenly knifed in the back. KAZAMA, a newspaper delivery boy Kenji had recently gotten to know, was holding a knife. It was a desperate action of a man who couldn’t even hurt a fly. Kenji tried to fight back but collapsed. As Kazama saw Kenji, he went crazy and run off. Kenji tried to talk to his wife on the phone, but she didn’t hear the phone as she was too busy cooking and waiting for his return..
As he lost consciousness, in Kenji’s mind, was all this a dream or an illusion? Images of him serving the mafia boss and living happily with his wife rose to the surface.
